Projects In partership with PURE Trust
What you’re supporting
Barclaycard Breathe is the only UK credit card to donate 50% of profit to support carbon reduction projects in the UK and abroad.
All donations are sent to our independent environmental partner – PURE the Clean Planet Trust. Donations will be used to support carbon offset projects that meet the Government’s proposed code of best practice for carbon offsetting.
Barclaycard Breathe Projects:
Our projects have been chosen because each of them showcases different key renewable energy technologies which have a crucial role to play in the solution to climate change.
We are currently working with PURE to increase the number of suitable projects in the Barclaycard Breathe portfolio. Our main goal is to highlight regions and project types from neglected sectors of the Kyoto Protocol that have strong sustainability benefits.
PURE’s Standards:
PURE is committed to meeting the Government’s proposed Code of Best Practice for Carbon Offsetting, which sets minimum quality standards for carbon offset projects and requires transparent reporting of expenses incurred by carbon offsetting organisations.

About PURE the Clean Planet Trust:
PURE the Clean Planet Trust is the first UK charity (number 1112249) dedicated to combating climate change through carbon offsetting and is a simple way for individuals and businesses to directly support the Kyoto process. Donations to PURE have a double environmental benefit:
- PURE helps to finance projects worldwide that reduce carbon emissions by buying high quality, regulated carbon credits from these projects.
- By permanently removing these carbon credits from the market, PURE also reduces the number of ‘licenses to pollute’ in circulation, therefore forcing further reductions in carbon emissions.
PURE was launched on November 29th 2006 by Climate Change and Environment Minister Ian Pearson who stated: “The Government welcomes the launch of Pure Trust’s carbon offsetting scheme. The Scheme offers credits that have been generated from emissions reductions that are regulated, verified and for which there is a clear audit trail.”
Minimum Quality Standards
PURE only supports projects that meet and exceed the standards of the Kyoto Protocol - the major international agreement to reduce global carbon emissions.
PURE focuses exclusively on projects to increase renewable energy and to enhance energy efficiency. Such projects have been recognised internationally as one of the main ways to help developing countries to grow sustainably. They also offer direct benefits to local communities.
PURE also selects projects that have additional environmental, social and economic benefits in addition to simply reducing emissions. For example this can include protecting biodiversity and endangered habitats or providing income to rural economies.
